Case Studies
The proof of a successful project is demonstrated in the final product produced. Avnet Embedded´s proven track record includes ODM projects with the following companies:
Camelot
Camelot is the licensed operator of the UK National Lottery. As part of the next generation of lottery scratchcard dispensers, Camelot required an innovative design to maximise advertising opportunities.
Avnet Embedded designed and developed this unique 12.1” digital signage monitor for Camelot. It incorporates a CMO panel and involved utilising a far east partnership for the design and manufacture of this unique solution. The design of the screen incorporated a bespoke ultra thin front bezel to maximise space available for advertising.
Driver electronics such as the VGA card and Inverter were customised to ensure optimum performance of the screen. 29,800 scratchcard dispensers incorporating the Avnet Embedded screen have been installed across the UK in supermarkets, newsagents, and forecourts replacing all existing dispensers.
Energist
Energist develops and markets the Ultra VPL™ Variable Pulsed Light system to health clinics and salons worldwide. The Ultra VPL system removes unwanted hair and rejuvenates skin by delivering rapid pulses of light energy. The machine is controlled via a Single Board Computer (SBC) that manages the user interface and co-ordinates the pulsed-light generation circuitry.
Avnet Embedded selected the optimum SBC to meet size, cost and power constraints, along with an integrated Toshiba LCD and 4-wire resistive touchscreen. Avnet Embedded also designed a custom backlight inverter, to consolidate functions onto a single board computer, and arranged for CTL, an in-group subcontractor to assemble the units.
Following the successful launch of the product, Avnet Embedded was then involved in an update programme for the Ultra VPL. Several major components were updated with enhanced capabilities. To minimise changes to other components, Avnet Embedded identified a replacement SBC power consumption with the cooled. Other valuable hardware upgrades for Ultra VPL included specifying the latest 10.4” Toshiba LCD display, to take advantage of improved performance displays on the market and to pre-empt any end-of-life notices for the original LCD.
Iris Personal Valet
The Iris Personal Valet is a battery powered unit with WiFi connection for use anywhere in a hotel room, from ordering your breakfast to checking your flight times.
Avnet Embedded helped to convert the Iris concept into reality by providing invaluable engineering guidance and ODM expertise throughout the project development. Designed to offer a simple and elegant appearance suitable for premier hotel rooms, the Iris Personal Valet provides a simple portable handset, with an intuitive touchscreen displaying a menu that is unique to each hotel. The unit incorporates an 8.9” LCD screen, custom motherboard and Microsoft® Embedded operating system.
Mobitec
Mobitec is a leading supplier of internal and external signage for buses. To help meet the increased demand for internal signage systems on board buses, Avnet Embedded was selected to develop a 19” wide TFT based solution. After evaluating Mobitec’s requirements, an SBC platform and 19” TFT display were specified. These products were chosen based on various criteria which included the need for only minor modifications and a high brightness display with excellent contrast. Backward compatibility to existing Mobitec systems in the market was required.
To facilitate this, Avnet Embedded worked with an ODM partner to design the units so that Mobitec could integrate its own communication board if required.
Up to five displays are needed within a bus installation and to maintain a cost effective solution for Mobitec, a slave monitor with an identical mechanical design was developed.
This ensured that only one master in each bus was required, which can drive all slaves with the custom designed scaler board functionality. These display terminals are currently being installed in buses worldwide.
